Gael: Pegasus

Stampede

To see these glorious beasts in flight has always been a desire of mine. I had heard that they lived in herds deep in the Reox's Spine mountains. I sought out distant relatives in the Fire Rock Mountains and began my quest to find these great flying animals.

I will not tell you how to find the valley I discovered but it was a hard trek and if I hadn't my strong connection to the Circle I don't know if I could have made it. The valley is located very high and again our ability to live anywhere came to great effect on this quest of mine.

When we came across there valley I was taken aback of the verdant beauty of the valley. A great swift river moved through the valley, out into a great lake. The valley was covered in trees but far fewer then I would have thought. The majority of it was covered in great grasses. No doubt part of why the they have settled here. I spent several years here watching and slowly gaining the trust of these majestic animals.

What I have learned is that they are very different from the human's horses, but also have some surprising similarites. The appearance of these fine animals has always been recorded as all white. This is both true and false. The vast majority of them are a mixture of various shades of brown, with black and white colouration. Only the head Stallion is white. When a male takes control of a herd his colouration actually changes to all white. And it remains so even if that stallion should lose his herd, he remains all white for the rest of his life. He may gain back his herd or gain another but it does make me belive that any Pegasus that has been seen before was a rogue male searching for a new herd. The one thing that certainly sets them apart from human's steeds is their intelligence. They are quite smart, understanding Elven and Noric and some even the language of the elements. I didn't learn this for some time, assumining they weren't capable of language. I was rather surprised to learn that all the while I had been there the first year of my studies, they had in fact been listening in on my conversations. Once I did gain a greater trust of them I was able to have very long and complex conversations with many of them.

Their ability to fly is certainly of magical nature, though exactly how is not known to me. They can carry quite a large load though they don't like to carry heavy loads unless a great need exists. Though no doubt in my mind that the Eldar were responsible for their initial creation, these great beasts have embraced the Circle. They fly very swiftly, able to bank and turn with great percision. They can land on a very short path and rarly need more then ten metres to take to the air again. They spend an amazing amount of time on the ground feeding, though no more then a regular horse. Providing more evidence that their flight is powered by ancient magic.

I have also learned that because of the inherent magic of these animals, many of their body parts carry a risidual magical energy that can be used for a variety of uses. In no way do I support the hunting of the Pegasus. The items I crafted from them was from feathers that had fallen out, bones from their dead, that they allowed me to gather, and other materials as they provided me. One does not want to anger a stallion of a herd as you'll have a mass of flying hooves coming at you that are quite sharp, and quite capable of trampling someone.
